Bottle cages and adapters

A second bottle in a crowded frame

With a frame bag in the triangle, one gravel rider carries 600 ml instead of 1,550 (his post). We move your cage by the millimetres it needs, or draw a side-loader around your bottle. Both bolt to your frame's own bottle bosses.

Side-view drawing of a small front triangle with a bag under the top tube and a shock in front of the seat tube: on the left the cage on the bosses, the bottle's lid hitting the bag on the way out; on the right the same cage moved down the tube on our plate, the bottle coming out clear.
Stock: the cage on the bosses, and the lid hits the bag on the way out.Ours: a plate moves the cage down the tube until the bottle comes out clear.

Why it fails

Why bought adapters miss by millimetres

Bosses sit where the frame maker put them, 64 mm apart. A slotted B-RAD 2 slides the cage up to 54 mm. If that's far enough, buy it. A side-loader changes which side the bottle leaves. The bottle still has to clear the bag, the top tube or the shock on the way out, often by millimetres. We measure that gap, then draw the part.

Designs

What we'd draw for your bike

Shift plate: the cage moves exactly as far as it needs

Two countersunk screws into your bosses and a new pair of threads 12 to 50 mm away. The base is shaped to your round or oval down tube, so the plate can't rock, and the drawing shows the gap to your bag before you pay. A longer plate adds a tail for two CO2 cartridges.

Close render of the charcoal plate on a grey down tube, a thin blue-grey pad line under it: both countersunk heads flush, MAX 1200 g · 3 Nm on its side and a grey cage bolted on with two button heads; the 750 ml bottle is pulled halfway up so both cage bolts show.

Side render close on the bottle: the lower half of a half-frame bag under a small hardtail's top tube, the cage straight on the bosses; the 750 ml bottle, pulled 16 mm up the cage, already has its lid on the bag before its base clears the cage.Same camera: the charcoal plate on the bosses carries the cage 30 mm further down the tube, its feet on the plate's new threads; pulled 20 mm, the bottle's base clears the cage and the lid is still 9 mm under the bag.

Side-loader drawn around one bottle and one gap

The offset is built into the spine and the opening is on the side you choose, drawn around one bottle and the gap it has.

Riders' posts

What riders posted

From forums, not from customers

  • August 2026 Transition TR11 2026, a downhill frame. In an Elite side-entry cage, the lids of 400–500 ml bottles hit the top tube and bend the cage. A Fidlock or a centred cage hits the shock's piggyback at the lower boss. Another owner says a Fidlock 450 fits.
  • August 2026 Trek Procaliber AL, size M (17"). The rider wants two bottles of about 700 ml. The Elite T-Race Carbon is sold as side-entry, yet the bottle still goes in from the top at an angle. Replies suggested a Specialized Zee Cage and a Syncros cage, and the thread closed without a fix.
  • April 2026 A small frame, and a bag takes the spot for the second cage. The rider wanted more to drink on long rides. Replies: a backpack with a bladder, or a Topeak cage mount on the bar.
  • June 2026 A Rockbros cage listed at 13.77 zł, on a Rockrider 500: too big for the lower bosses and too tall for the upper ones. Other buyers of the same cage say a Rockbros 530 ml steel bottle won't go in, or that its holes match none of their frames.
  • October 2026 Cannondale Quick 3 step-through. No bottle fits on the low mount, and a second owner has the same problem. Replies suggested a side-loader or a Fidlock; nobody confirmed either fits.

Limits

We don't make these: what to buy

We bolt to metal, to accessory threads, or where your radar's band sits today. We never make or modify brakes or steering parts, or anything that holds a rack or a child seat.

  • A cage on the fork legs, or a clamp round a tube → Salsa Anything Cage HD, $34.99, on three-bolt mounts, or Topeak VersaMount straps, €9.95 a pairAnything on a fork leg can reach the wheel, and we bolt only to the frame's own bosses.
  • Bottles behind the saddle → Elite Skekane, £35.99, two cages on the saddle railsIt hangs from the rails, and we don't print rail carriers.
  • Loose or damaged bosses → A warranty claim, or a shop that fits a new rivnutOur part holds only as well as the bosses under it.
  • A cheap cage that won't take a standard bottle → Elite Custom Race Plus, €25, with an adjustable grip for 74 mm bottles, or Zéfal Pulse S2, €17.95A good bought cage does this for less than a print.

FAQ

Questions before you order

Will it rattle loose?

The plate holds on two countersunk M5 screws with a nylon patch, heads flush, at 3 Nm and no more: many bosses are rivnuts in a thin tube. The base is shaped to your down tube and sits on a 1.5 mm TPU pad, so it can't rock. Check both screws before rides, as you would the cage bolts. Before the first part of a new design ships, we ride it with a full 1 L bottle on gravel and re-check the torque. As of October 2026 these designs are drawn and rendered; photos of the first test prints will go on this page.

How far can it move the cage?

From 12 to 50 mm along the tube, set to the millimetre from your photo, and the drawing shows the gap to the bag or the top tube before you pay. Below 12 mm the new holes would overlap the frame's own. We stop at 50 mm because the further the bottle sits from the bosses, the harder it levers on them, and on a thin tube that load lands on two rivnuts. If 50 mm doesn't clear it, we tell you straight away.

Can I keep my CO2 under a Fidlock?

On a longer plate. Its tail runs past the lower end with clips for two 16 g CO2 cartridges, and the Fidlock base bolts to the plate's new pair of threads, 64 mm apart like any cage. Tell us the cartridge model, and the drawing shows the tail's clearance to the bottom bracket or the shock. One rider stopped using a favourite CO2 holder after moving to Fidlock and now carries the cartridges in a bag.

Can you put a cage on my fork legs?

No. Anything on a fork leg sits next to the spokes, and if it slips it can go into the wheel. If your fork has three-bolt mounts, the Salsa Anything Cage HD, $34.99, is made for them and carries 3 kg. Without mounts, Topeak VersaMount straps fit tubes from 20 to 60 mm, €9.95 a pair. Check with your fork's maker first, especially on carbon or tapered legs.

Does it work on carbon frames?

On the frame's own bottle bosses, yes. Both designs bolt only to them, at 3 Nm and no more. The shift plate sits on a TPU pad shaped to the tube, and the side cage sits on the bosses' own flanges. Nothing we make goes round a tube, so no strap or clamp ever touches the carbon. If your carbon frame has no bosses where you want a bottle, we don't add any; see what to buy instead.
